PLAYER ONE
Personal project
"Player One" is an engaging and immersive art piece that invites viewers to explore the intersection of gaming and real life experiences during the pandemic. Commissioned by Quad Gallery Derby as part of their Season of Play, the artwork is a project-mapped character sculpture that serves as a storyteller. It is part of an exhibition called "Play during the Pandemic" that highlights the importance of play and imagination during difficult times.
The sculpture tells a series of stories that blend fantasy and real-life experiences, recounting the character's escape into the world of computer games during lockdown. Over the course of seven days, the sculpture describes the character's journey into digital realms such as space, medieval times, and zombie-infested shopping centers. The stories are a compelling exploration of the ways in which digital spaces can provide an escape from the challenges of the real world.
As viewers engage with the sculpture, they are transported into the world of the character and the stories they tell. The use of projection mapping technology creates an immersive and dynamic experience that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction. The artwork is a powerful reflection on the role of play and imagination in coping with difficult times, inviting viewers to engage with their own experiences of escapism and gaming.
